Boost Your Network Signal!

Smart TV

First the laptop, then the smart phone, then the tablet, even the newer refrigerators, and now the smart TV. Technology and the Internet have become entwined with so much of our lives (and electronics). If you’re a smart TV owner, you can appreciate the beauty, the ease, the reach of your technologically savvy television. You can stream movies and videos, watch Netflix and YouTube, check your email, update your social media accounts, and surf the Web, all on a large screen. Convenient, easy on the eyes, crisp and clean clarity… unless you get the message that you cannot connect to the Internet.  However, a smart TV’s inability to connect to the Internet through a poor network signal, even though all our other wi-fi devices are connected, defeats the whole purpose of having one.

There are several reasons why your smart TV may fail to connect to the Internet or have a poor network signal.  Most homes with wi-fi can accommodate standard devices (smart phones, computers, laptops) getting online; but smart TVs require more bandwidth than your standard devices. And multiple devices drawing from the same network signal source could affect the speed of the signal. Other obstructions to your smart TV gaining access to the Internet can be metal objects or walls in the house.

Fear not. There is a solution. You can boost your signal strength using a range extender, which can extend the range of your wireless network by 10,000 feet by repeating and amplifying the signal. The increased strength not only allows you greater distance, eliminating those dead spots in your house, but also allows the wireless signal to penetrate walls and other obstructions.

With a range extender, your smart TV should have no trouble getting a signal; and, of course, once online, you’ll be able to take full advantage of all the wonderful features of the TV.

Whole House Intercom Systems

OnQ IntercomDo you enjoy listening to music at home? Are you confined to the one area of the house that has the stereo, or do you have the music blaring in order to hear it from room to room?

When you need to say something to someone in another part of the house, do you get up and walk over or do you find yourself speaking at a high decibel?

With a whole house intercom system, there is no more yelling across the house, and no more complaints about the loud music that no one likes else except you. Whole house intercom systems allow you to communicate from room to room via speakers/intercoms that are installed in each room (or in as many rooms as you choose). You can talk to or listen in on any of the rooms that have a speaker installed. Privacy buttons prevent others from listening in on any particular room.

You can also play your favorite music in one room, while someone in the next room listens to a genre of his/her choice, and yet another person listens to the news elsewhere in the house. Or why not set the mood with soft background music throughout your home? With a whole house intercom system, the choice is yours.

A System generally includes a speaker for your front door, which allows you to communicate with visitors without opening your door; an AM/FM radio with presets that can be chosen from the speakers installed in the rooms; and optional outdoor speakers for your deck or patio. Each intercom/speaker has its own volume control and privacy button. A System not only makes it convenient to communicate, but can offer peace of mind, as you can listen in on other rooms, for example, a child’s room on the other end of the house.

Guest Post: How Control4 Has Changed My Life

Today’s blog post is from Control4′s Beta Program Manager, Matt Sand, on how home automation has truly changed his life:

Have you ever worried that you forgot to lock the doors at night? Have you ever wondered, “what if someone breaks in and takes my kids during the night?”  What would you do if a water leakage occurred while on vacation? Have you ever just wanted to turn on your thermostat without getting out of bed?

Changed Life

In 2006, the ability to do all of this and more came true for my family and I when I installed Control4. Control4 provides me the opportunity to have my family feel safe and secure.

My entire Control4 project consists of 7 water sensors, 9 zigbee automatic door locks, 61 motion sensors, 15 contact sensors, 2 thermostats, and my house is all completed with wireless lighting.

When you walk into my house and open the front door, you are presented with the tone from The Jetsons. This alerts us when the kids decide to go out or if someone is coming in. At 2:00 in the morning, my Control4 system is programmed to find out if my door is unlocked, and if so, the system automatically locks it. Every time my doors lock or unlock, my wife and I receive a text message letting us know that someone has either entered or has left the house.

With the help of motion sensors, the lights in our home automatically turn on and off through motion detection. Who needs a light switch? If motion is not sensed for 20 minutes, the lights automatically turn off. This has saved my family and I a lot of money on my electric bill and has prevented wasted energy. Also with motion sensors and timers, if the house has reported no one at home, our thermostat will automatically turn to 75 degrees.

My entire basement has water leakage sensors. When water is detected, my wife and I immediately receive a text message, the entire house is alerted with an announcement, and all the lights in the house start flashing for 10 minutes until the leak has stopped.

If a fire were to occur in my house, all the lights in the house would turn on and an announcement would play, warning my family to leave the house immediately.

When Elizabeth Smart was abducted right from her bedroom, the whole state (and country) was affected by the news. I immediately took precautions in my own home. All my windows, doors, and gates have been outfitted with contact sensors which will alert me when the gate, windows or doors are opened. I have also placed motion sensors in my backyard and during the hours of 2:00am – 5:00am, if motion is detected while my house is in the “off mode,” it will alert me – flashing my bedroom light and playing an announcement throughout the house.

And on a lighter note, notifying the kids of dinner time has never been easier. With the intercom solution Control4 provides, I simply push a single button and broadcast the message throughout the home.

These are some of the awesome things Control4 allows me to do. If you are looking to make your life safer, more secure, easier and catered to your preferences, Control4 is your answer.

Guest Post: Home Automation’s Power to Simplify Your Life, Reduce Expenses, and Increase Security

We are starting the week off right with a great blog post from one of our excellent Control4 Dealers, Harry Saini:

In today’s costly world, homeowners are fully aware of the expenses related to inflated energy costs and inefficient home security systems.

Guest1There is nothing worse than receiving an electricity bill and being shocked by the amount owed at the end of a month or stolen possessions that could have been more strategically secured. Such realities have led homeowners to seek technologies that can help them beat the current system.

A growing number of homeowners are educating themselves on basic energy management and security devices, which often combine the use of innovate shade and control systems. For instance, Control4 offers a number of solutions that help homeowners monitor and control their home lighting from an iPad, iPhone, or wireless remote. With Control4, you can pre-program lighting levels and reduce energy output.

It is also amazingly easy to set lighting to turn on and off at specific times. This significantly reduces the possibility of a light being left on throughout the night, or for several days while a homeowner is on vacation. Additionally, with Control4’s remote access service, no matter where in the world a homeowner travels he or she can turn lights on or off with a simple touchscreen command.

To make the management of lighting much easier to maintain, Control4 offers keypads with captions that can read “kitchen,” “hallway,” “master bedroom,” “patio,” and more. With a push of a single button, lighting is ignited in a desired location. The Control4 suite of products also offers dimmers that allow for lights to be set to a particular level.

Another ground breaking product for ultimate lighting, shading, security, and energy control is the Lutron RadioRA 2. The system is a holistic approach that combines total light and shade functionality. Radio RA 2 has the power to adjust the amount of daylight and electric light in a room throughout an entire home. Shades can also be lowered, electric powered curtains closed, and lighting ignited at pre-programed times.

For instance, if particular rooms within a home are in direct sunlight in the afternoon, the lowering of window shades and closing of curtains can significantly reduce room temperatures. Or when the family is on vacation and dusk approaches, lowered shades, closed curtains, and automated lighting can offer higher levels of security. And for the family that has developed a high-tech home theatre, with the single push of a button window shades can be lowered and lights set to a particular level to create the perfect ambiance.

Many homeowners love the fact that both the Control4 and RadioRA 2 systems are fully scalable. This provides homeowners the power to start with a single room and expand when time and budget permits.

Seeking to automate your home for added simplicity, comfort, energy efficiency, and security? The beauty of 2012 is that homeowners have more control than ever before.

The secret to discovering and installing a solution that best fits your needs is to consult with a personalized home automation expert.

Living the Automated Life

Sometimes in the world of automation it’s easy to forget how the un-automated live. I recently moved into a new place that did not yet have my Control4 system installed. I went to turn on my TV, wanting to watch DirecTV, which worked fine using my DirecTV remote. But then I decided to watch something on Netflix via my Apple TV. I sat and stared at my DirecTV remote, pushing every button I could think of in an effort to get my Apple TV menu on the screen. I was not successful.

Automated Life

Instead, I had to dig through boxes to find my TV remote (which I hadn’t used in years), also had to find my Apple TV remote and Blu-ray player remote while I was at it. Suddenly I had 4 remotes sitting on my coffee table and with all that, I couldn’t even turn the lights off when I was ready to watch a movie. When I made a stink about never being able to reach the remote I needed and walking to my light switch, my friends gave me looks of extreme disdain and said, “Welcome to real life.” Well it made me mad. Who says that has to be real life? What genius decided that every time I want something new in my living room, I have to get a new remote and learn how to control it. They then criticized me for sounding like their grandparents and being unbelievably lazy. Here’s my response:

A wise man once said, “Laziness travels so slowly that poverty soon overtakes him.”?  Here are some other inventions which might have initially seemed frivolous:

  • Bifocals – Invented by Benjamin Franklin, the same Ben Franklin referred to earlier as a wise man, these glasses are only for people too lazy to lift two pairs of glasses to their face?
  • The typewriter – it just allowed people to be lazy about their penmanship
  • The wheel –I’m sure the cro-magnons would have evolved into the modern day homo sapien without this eventually

Want something more modern? Let’s just try the TV remote in and of itself. The plain old remote that just controls your one TV, should we complain about this device and how it has empowered us to be lazy? What about the microwave? Indoor plumbing ? All these things are unnecessary, we had solutions that worked just fine: buttons on the front of the TV, ovens, and outhouses.

I guess in the end, my response is to once again quote Benjamin Franklin, “A life of leisure and a life of laziness are two things.”
